'The West', and particularly NATO, has become bogged down in a war of
attrition in Afghanistan and across the border into Pakistan. How is this war
experienced on the ground? Why do people resist? How can the war and
slaughter, with its resultant misery, be brought to an end? What else can we
learn about Pashtun culture beyond the stereotypes of the Taliban, and what
possibilities exist for positive change in the region?
The speaker, Ali Gohar, works in Pakistan and Afghanistan and has among
many achievements in his career dealt with issues of domestic violence,
restorative justice, and written and worked on developing the jirga as a means
of conflict resolution. (See http://www.justpeaceint.org )
