JPI Response to Devastating flood in Pakistan 2010
Over the course of the 2010 monsoon season, Pakistan experienced the worst floods in its history. Heavy rainfall, flash floods and riverine floods combined to create a moving body of water equal in dimension to the land mass of the United Kingdom. The floods have affected 84 districts out of a total of 121 districts in Pakistan, and more than 20 million people – one-tenth of Pakistan’s population–devastating villages from the Himalayas to the Arabian Sea.
JPI from the day first (29th July 2010) initiated active response to flood affected population in Charsadda, Peshawar, Nowshera and Mardan Districts. The organization initially provided safe water for drinking, cooked food and life saving medicine. Later on JPI extended activities in provision of non cooked food packages, safe water through water tinkering, Medical Camps, Hygiene Kits, Provision of VIP Latrines in Schools where flood affectees were residing, provision of NFIs. These activities were continued till September 2010.
From October 2010 JPI initiated Early Recovery and Rehabilitation initiatives in Charsadda, Swat, Kohistan and D.i.Khan districts with financial Support of UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR and Norvision Church Aid (NCA).
